  • Schools are a nexus of health and well-being for children, particularly in less resourced communities where the burdens of the COVID-19 pandemic are being borne disproportionately.

Welcome to HEAT Corps

Johns Hopkins HEAT (Health Education and Training) Corps engages K-12 students attending schools in Baltimore, across the country, and abroad in a crucial educational dialogue about COVID-19 – students meet virtually via Zoom with trained Hopkins instructors to complete the HEAT Corps curriculum. We believe that youth advocates represent an integral part of an inclusive pandemic response.

About HEAT

Tools for Educators

As school districts across the country make plans to reopen in the face of an ever-changing public health crisis, how do we equip educators with the tools they need to speak effectively to their students about the persistence of COVID-19? How do we build awareness and understanding for students spanning kindergarten through grade 12 about the science of the virus and its impact on social and emotional well-being? The Johns Hopkins Health Education and Training (HEAT) Corps will collaborate with classroom teachers to convey these essential public health messages that are critical to abating the pandemic and to promoting an inclusive recovery.

The virtual Hopkins classroom

Through a series of 45-minute sessions – the COVID-19 curriculum is delivered virtually in 30-minute modules using online platforms (e.g. Google Classroom, Blackboard, Zoom) with an additional 15 for questions and answers – the HEAT Corps’ current goal is to heighten K-12 student awareness about the science of COVID-19 and the public health response. All sessions are taught by HEAT Corps volunteers.
